The preparation and/or sale of a yearling is a specialised business. This stage of a young horses life is critical and takes between 8 to 12 weeks. Each yearling has individual needs and over/underfeeding or the wrong conditioning can damage the yearling for life. |

Preparing yearlings for sales and or racing requires a mixture of both mental and physical training. Some say the mental preparation is as important, or maybe more important, than physical training at this stage. To be a successful racehorse, this is when the foundations must be laid, in order to build co-operation between the horse and his trainer. |

The horse is a sensitive, impressionable animal who has a great memory. He records and retains information and it is not always possible to 'erase' past training attempts and bad experiences. This is why the yearling stage is so important and the training must be done correctly the first time. Conditioning the yearling is also vital to develop good muscle tone and size. |
